The GWS Giants have conceded that they will more than likely have to trade forward Cameron McCarthy at the end of the season, but the club is reportedly determined to get the best possible deal, even if it means that McCarthy doesn't get to Fremantle.

The Dockers offered their first round pick last year, as well as this year's first round draft pick, which would currently be pick four in the national draft.

McCarthy is training part-time with WAFL side South Fremantle and is content on playing next season, after taking this season off with anxiety problems.

GWS Giants Football Operations Boss Wayne Campbell told the Herald Sun that he might remain at the Giants.

“There are lots of outcomes still. One is Fremantle, one is West Coast, there are 15 other sides and he might stay at GWS for another year or for 10 more years,’’ he said.

“Players don’t often not get to where they want to go to, it means the club is committed to them, but if the West Coast deal is a lot stronger, then so be it.

“When we get an outcome with Fremantle or West Coast or wherever else that satisfies them or us, he would be released. It wouldn’t be before that.”

Last month, Giants coach Leon Cameron said it's looking more and more unlikely that McCarthy will return.
